think I bought a diesel distributor

I bought this IH distributor off ebay. Thinking it was for a M or H. It came today. I took it a part and found it has no advance
weights. I knew the diesels turned CCW. The listing said it came off a Farmall. I assumed it was a M,H. Never thought about a
diesel.

The shaft is one piece, never had any weights so I'm guessing this is a MD, WD9, WD6, TD6-9 distributor?

It was cheap. I'm going to put in new parts get it working good and relist it. I'm not complaining at all about the seller. He did
nothing wrong and I didn't ask questions. Just want to check with the IH guys about what this distributor fits before I list it.

Yes that's a diesel shaft. If I remember correct the no advance shaft came out around 57 or 58. Don't quote me on that my memory may be off. May be a replacement shaft in that housing, didn't think distributor serial numbers went that high for ones that came with the solid shaft. Need the first letter to left of the serial number in the picture that can't be seen to know.

Have to confess, for just a moment I thought "diesel distributor?" Then I remembered, we're talking about OLD IH diesels.

Checked the parts book, that would be a late distributor for use on the 450d. The late md thru 400d shows weights being used. Also the part numbers don't correspond with the md, smd or smtad tractors. Jim.

Checked my memory and a little off. Made it in a few in 1956. Effective D-281, serial # 847. 12-19-56.
If the distributor came as a complete assembly the first letter on the base should be a C. Looks like you have a 7 and maybe a 4 for the month. So if it has a C before them its from a 57 model gas start diesel.

I was thinking the same thing. Forgot about the MD starting on gas.

Thank you for the information. I now know I have a 450D distributor.

I have one last question, Wouldn't still work on the old letter series diesels? I don't really see any reason for timing advance on a gas start diesel. They only run for a minute or two on gas.

dad had a WD9 back in the 70's. He put a dist off an Allis Chalmers WD on it. May not have been correct but worked for many years.

The engines equipped with advance on the diesel do run a little better on the gas cycle. I have changed a couple over the years that came with out advance.
