the lift goes up but i try to push it down by hand and it fights back. as soon as i turn tractor off lift starts down and i can push it down by hand. any ideas as to what is going on

The424 has a shut off valve that locks the 3 point lift. If you close that and the lift goes down, you have a leaking piston seal in the 3 point lift cylinder. I used to have a 424, I forget where the shut off valve is , but as I recall, under the seat RH side. The lift cylinder seal on mine went bad and did the same thing you describe. The original seal is leather and needs to be upgraded to an O ring which requires machine work on the piston or a new piston. Mine was damaged and required a new piston. The new piston will be quite pricey from IH. I got one from a Mahindra dealer for about half. The early Mahindras were just copies of the 424. The lift cylinder is located inside the hydraulic unit under the seat. It ts separate from the transmission. The mechanic that did mine did it without draining the lift unit, not feasible for a first time at it as the cylinder is under the fluid level.

Hi, is there plenty of hydraulic fluid in the reservoir? Has the suction filter been cleaned?
There is an inspection plate under the seat, you can clean all the dirt from around it, remove the bolts and start the tractor and let it run at about 1000 RPM and look under the inspection plate and the hydraulic oil should be constantly flowing into the reservoir without bubbles and not in spurts.

The 3pt jumping can be caused by many things: leaky seals on the 3pt lift cylinder, air in the hydraulic oil, lack of hydraulic oil flow and problems with connection of 3pt lift or draft control linkage.
