Farmall SM-TA PTO Coupler Shaft

Recently purchased this SMTA which had a PTO that I was told by the previous owner, probably just needed adjusting. Adjusting didn't work and finally discovered the coupler shaft between the rear unit and the shaft to the seasonal disconnect is missing, gone, no trace. Found a couple used ones within 300 miles of me here in WA.

Don't know why it's missing, but makes me wonder why. Are there other problems in the drive train or did they have trouble finding a replacement shaft and put it back together again without one? Doesn't look like an easy task lining everything up to replace it, so maybe they just decided they didn't need the PTO and put the coupler shaft on the shelf. I don't know!

Anyway, I have some pictures and test results of some of the mechanics of the PTO drive train.

Looking to tap the fine resources on this site for some much needed help. My son and I are novices who are sometimes dangerous with a wrench in hand but not afraid to us it.

After going thru a fine check list offered by D Slater from a previous post, we finally removed the rear unit where we discovers why the PTO wouldn't engage. No Coupler Shaft connecting to the seasonal disconnect shaft.

Seasonal disconnect cover and lever assembly. The bolt hole that's used to lock the disconnect lever is no longer a blind hole and now doubles as a drain plug. Should we fix this or just deal with it? No welding equipment.

The seasonal disconnect dogs look pretty good to my untrained eye. Maybe they haven't been used hardly at all. They were disconnected when we picked up the tractor.

End of rear PTO unit.

Out of tractor we adjusted the bands and the unit locked in the operating handle forward position, free wheeled in the center position and locked in the engaged position with a load on (by hand holding the shaft).

Questions:

What's the secret to aligning the new shaft and couplings with the rear unit. We don't have the parts yet, but I've heard from [b:99eceb54ae]sflem849[/b:99eceb54ae] in the other post that it's (as he says) a PITA.

We're also looking for the swinging draw bar assembly to add to the Saginaw 3 Point. We've been looking around WA locally, and the only good salvage yard nearby scrapped all there stuff five years ago and now only sell new parts. called a couple others and no luck. Found some pieces scattered here and there on Ebay. I thought they'd be easy since they were the same thru many models and series of Farmalls.

We're looking forward to putting this old gal to work. Not for yard art. Maybe a parade or two.

Thanks again

Dennis

Looks like someone used too long a bolt and broke the casting. I would grind the broken area flat and then run a tap through hole. Use a bolt long enough to extend up past the broken area and then put an acorn nut on it. find someone to braze the nut to the casting. Do not tighten the nut. It works best if you can back it off just a bit from finger tight. When the brass cools it will draw the threads just a bit tighter. You may have to run the tap through the hole again after it cools.

Have you tried Draper Tractor for drawbar? They are located in Washington near Idaho border. Have gotten quite a few parts from them in the past.

I called Drapers and they just sold the last one they had. Tried Farmland Tractor Supply in Oregon too. No luck there either, but they both have the coupler shaft and couplings in stock. We'll keep poking around, never know when one might show up locally. Thanks for the tip Hayfarmer.

Did you try Nyssa Tractor about that Drawbar?? They are the largest scrapyard I know of in this part of the world.
I'm also curious about the resolution to your PTO dilemma, Somethin's wonky with mine too, just hasn't made it's way up
my priority list yet...

Thanks [b:66f8b9639c]State of Jefferson[/b:66f8b9639c], I called them with my list and they were going to check the yard and call me back. Haven't heard from them yet.

Once we get the missing shaft and couplings I'm sure hoping that we'll have a working PTO and not just a solution to one problem. Got my fingers crossed.

To put some closure on the main part of this topic, we found a good used coupler shaft and couplings, replaced a missing O-Ring on the rear unit, new gasket on the seasonal disconnect cover and assembled everything with no problem. The shaft lined up perfectly during assembly.

Replaced fluids and did a test run with a brush hog and it works great.

Still looking for the draw bar pieces, may have to fabricate something and buy a new draw bar tongue.

Thanks to all for your help.
