Cub steering

I had to remove the steering column on my 47 Cub to remove the front end for some engine work and now that everything is back together I'm having steering problems. I would have thought the shaft would have just turned down into the gear with no problem but it took several attempts to get it to turn in enough to fasten the cap back and now it steers like a truck with no power steering. Its obviously binding somewhere. Any ideas on what is happening? On the bright side after basically putting in a new motor it runs like a million bucks - just need two hands to steer it.

Might have been a good idea to ask here first. good go on the engine but several CUb owners I know say to take the post apart up by the steering wheel and don't mess with the box. Sorry
