New B414 owner and new forum member

I purchased a 63 B414 diesel last October. I purchased with the intent to bush hog about 10 acres. The tractor shows signs of wear but not mistreated. I replaced the gauges and converted the glow plugs to use 12v. The previous owner did convert to a 12v charging system. I have changed the oil/fuel filter and flushed the radiator. The tractor cranks strong with the new glow plugs and only has to turn over a couple of times before it cranks. While idling the tractor will blow white smoke, the amount of smoke is less when the tractor is under a load, then when I give the throttle it will give some black smoke but takes off quickly then the smoke stops. It does idle good but sometimes it appears to "miss". I have bled the system per the manual but I have not checked the injectors or pre combustion chamber for sludge.

The hydraulics appear strong they lift a 5ft bush hog off the ground and 5ft disk with no effort. I did notice some gray fluid leaking around the hydraulic filter housing. My first thought is that I have water in the hydraulics and sludge has clogged the filter. I did not change the filter when I was changing the other fluids. Now what puzzles me is when I opened the fill port for the hydraulic fluid air rushed out along with about pint of gray fluid. This model has the manual draft control knob (not a lever), and at this point I do not know how to operate or it does not function properly.

In reading the forum responses for others I intend on checking the injectors for spray pattern and pre combustion chamber to try and eliminate the white smoke. I also have been keeping an eye on the water level to make sure I am not leaking water into the cylinder head.

I will change the hydraulic fluid and clean the filter this weekend.

The hydraulics have me puzzled as either having air or water contamination

Please feel free to offer any advice or comments

Hi, re B414D hydraulics, yes change fluid and clean the suction screen. I am surprised it has the old style draft control knob as my Dad purchase one of the first B414Ds in Canada in Dec of 1961 and took delivery in Apr 1962 and it had the two lever draft control. Draft control is only used for implements like plows and harrows that are in the ground.
Re black smoke when accelerating, this is normal, white smoke maybe a leaky injector, try some injector cleaner or ATF in the fuel OR a leaking head gasket, keep checking coolant lever, also can try putting rad cap on just enough to keep it on but not enough to pressurize the system. We did this to our B414D until we had time to change the head gasket that was leaking to the outside.

Good luck with your new B414D

Thanks so much for quick response. I also have a 53 Super A, both tractors are used on a small garden. No more than they are used I hope they will last a long time.

After the hydraulics I will work on the steering. I have read that is a common problem with these models. The tire rods are worn and there is play in the steering box.

So far eBay, Amazon, and Agri Supply have had the parts I have needed and reasonably priced.

I had a 63 B414 in 2020. Did alot of work to make it functional. It started great and run ok but no power what so ever so i removed injector pump and injectors and took them apart. I could not find any thing wrong. Still no power so i removed pump and injectors again and sent them to Dieseltech in Indiana. Got them back it and it made such a difference in power. I highly recommend Dieseltech for your injector pump and injector needs
