Water pump ?'s

I'm needing to disassemble for cleaning and painting. I have looked at the scamatic and am still unsure. In my gasket kit there are two felt seals that I'm not sure where they go...I am thinking they are for the water pump. With that said, if they are not and I need to reassemble the pump, what can I use for packing? Without having to order it. Or, should I just leave the pump assembled, tape off the problem areas for blasting and leave it at that? Also...I'd like to pull the impeller out and blast it as it is very corroded, but if I decide not to repackage will reinstalling the shaft hurt the packing?

Just curious what you other restorers have done? Don't wanna buy a new pump...bearings feel/appear to be great shape.

Thx, Chance

I always replace the pump if the impeller is damaged or corroded. My local Car Quest parts store will send them off for rebuild or one can order new. Either way, overheating a rebuild is not an option here.

Well, I just bought a new one....what's 160.00 when I'm in this deep, and it'll save me bunch of time.....a precious commodity

What tractor? Sounds like a H or M or some deviation from that. The two felts in a gasket package, are they whole or in halves. One whole felt would go in water pump between pulley and housing. Another whole felt would be for the front seal, but , being that seal is obsolete you won't use that one but replace with updated seal (I am kind of improvising my answer on that felt as that is the way it used to be forty years ago). If the felts are in halves they are for the rear main bearing. If not H or M or derivative forget I ever typed this information. Do not sand blast a shaft of pump.

Hey Pete,

Yeah, sorry I left out some info there, lol. It's an m and yes, the felts are whole....one large and one small. I suspected they for the water pump. I looked for packing or seals with no luck. Screw it, just going new as I don't have time to go over lil inexpensive pieces like this with a fine tooth comb. I enjoy it but time on this build has gotten into critical mass. Time to move along. The puzzle is starting to fall in place now though.
