Steering Cylinder Repair

Don't know what model tractor this pertained to, but a fellow told me that he needed to replace the seal in one end of the steering cylinder. Told his son to go to the Case/IH dealer and get the seal kit for both ends while they were at it. Son came home with only one kit because the price was $620.00! Called the dealer and questioned whether this was correct, and the dealer confirmed that it was. Asked the price of a complete new cylinder--$900.00!! Now, I don't claim to be some kind of whiz on pricing, but this simply does not make sense to me!

Most everybody hates it, but slow moving parts from most manufacturers get priced higher to pay for stocking and low production runs. The next step is to obsolete the part. There have been times I am glad to pay the premium price in order to get a part, but there are times I substitute and aftermarket part, used part, or make one myself. Most seals are available from seal and bearing companies at less than manufacturers prices which accelerates the manufacturer's discontinuation process. Case IH is no different in this respect than JD and GM. In fact the car companies discontinue parts much sooner than tractor companies do. One reason I like letter series Farmalls is there are lots of aftermarket parts and you can make your own in a lot of cases.
