D239 German diesel engine had the head surfaced and reinstalled. Valves are adjusted correct and been rechecked but now the valves contact the pistons. Do i install a thicker head gasket or add more gap to the valve lash thanks

first of all how much was taken off the head? machine shops usually have removed amount stamped in the corner someplace.

Valve recession from the surface of the head is .039" - .055" for intake valves and .047" - .063" for exhaust valves. Maximum recession for both intake and exhaust is .120".

If you had enough material removed from the surface of the head so that the valves no longer have the minimum recession you will need to have the valves reworked to obtain that clearance.

Next question, did the shop redo the valves and seats when they decked the head? Most if not all Diesel engines have a valve to deck height spec for that reason. In my younger days I made a mistake like that on a 256 ford, valves just touched the Pistons, I didn't cut the seats deep enough, didn't hurt anything but my pride. Won't do that again.

Ask the shop if they checked the valve to head surface distance. They might not be familiar with that engine. And if it's like my local shop they're so busy and if you asked to just deck the head that's what they'll do and wouldn't have thought about it.

Thanks very much for this information. I will check with the shop. Have a great 4th of July.
