Why did some

Why did some M's have a dipstick and also a provision in the block to run a upright distributor? It's a 6722 DJ block casting, and a 2-2-S. Engine number is 179427 X1

Most, if not all, IH engines had provision for a dipstick as the industrial tractors, I-6 etc., had dip-stick as wqell as the test cocks on the oil pan

Upright distributor mount is where the oil pump drives off the camshaft. I don't think you will EVER see a distributor mounted there.

all of the m series engines that were used for power units had the dipstick to check the oil. if you have a factory replacement block it will be machined for the oil dipstick a plate over the fuel pump hole and a couple other mounting bosses machined. I'm not sure where you came up with the upright distributor idea.

Don't think any block castings 6722DJ ever came with a dipstick although the boss for drilling the block for one was there. Casting 6943 had dipsticks, don't know if every single one did.
I don't know the answer to the distributor drive hole. Always wondered if they used one there in special cases. Parts books call the hole plug a distributor hole expansion plug. Even in parts books before IH started using distributors on tractors. Think I remember seeing some power unit blocks with a tapped hole near the plug with a screw in it.
Anyone saw a power unit used where a side mount distributor was needed? Would think if one was used it would need to be small bodied and a different oil pump shaft used.
If you have the tractor that went with the block it should be roughly around serial # 188000. Maybe a 1000 either way. Didn't take time to narrow it more.

It's the first m-248 that i have seen with a dipstick, the farmer must of ordered it that way, cant see a dealer doing it. Your pretty close,187627 X1. Is the serial No. And it's got the steel shift lever knob. Thanks

Just an FYI, but the dipstick on an H can be installed after you drill a hole about 2 3/4 inches down through that cast iron boss. It can be done, I did it, but wow what a drilled hle.

Several aftermarket and home made dip sticks are around along with IH ones. Picture of aftermarket and a IH diagram for putting in a dip stick.

I had to drill the block on a 450 for the dipstick when I replaced the original (cracked) block with one from a Super M.

I also have an H that is drilled for an aftermarket dip stick.
