544 engine problem update

Tractor was not running and stored inside, would not run but did start and run on maybe 2 cylinders with choke full on . checked compression and all around 165 and held . Turning over by hand you can feel the compression but cant feel anything on intake , removed the manifold , nothing in there and ports look clear. Turning engine with the starter and hand over the intake port very little draw . Any ideas, thanks

Stuck or burned valves would be my guess. Pull the valve cover and run the overhead and see where you are at.

Not likely to have compression thats that high and bad valves ....

Get it running again and use a propane torch with the head removed so it puts out pure propane, to test for intake leaks. Move it around the manifold to find them. if none, I would put a fresh set of plugs in it. Jim

i'd be looking at timing. plugs in the right holes on the dist cap, dist timed correctly to the cam gear. that's assuming you're getting a good spark at all plugs.

Thanks to everyone for advise you gave , it looks like someone used an after market manifold gasket or one that was for some thing else . It was to big and not in place, so over time was mostly gone but the from all angles appeared to be good , pulled the manifold today and will order new gasket . Thanks for your help
