Farmall H Brake Drum Wiggle?!?

Guys I'm restoring my first tractor, a farmall h. When I put back together the bull pinion bearing cage and screwed on the brake drum I noticed I could move the brake drum in and out, probly 1/8 an inch. Is this normal for there to be play there or is it suppose to be tight? Thanks for the help

I do not know, but I would like to help. I redid the brakes on my H a few years ago, but don't remember. I SUSPECT it is OK. Hope somebody who knows answers.

It is pretty much normal to have end play on the bull pinion shaft. When new they would have very little but that bearing keeps on wallowing out the housing so after many hours you get more end play. You will notice that the inside end of that bull pinion is supported by the differential gear. As the differential gear wears that end of the shaft moves up and down under load and thus that outer bearing on shaft pivots a little in the housing and wearing it. Often times people grab hold of the brake drum and feel movement and mistake it for looseness in the bearing when it is actually the differential end of the shaft moving up and down. On the 656 , IH finally addressed that problem by putting a needle bearing or bushing in the differential to support that end of the shaft. On the larger models the bull pinion is straddle mounted with tapered roller bearings so the differential has no part in supporting the shaft. That wear in the housings and differential and all other load bearing surfaces or parts is why we say, they are only new once. No restored tractor is like new unless all parts are new. They are repaired to once again be serviceable , not new. Don't worry about it.
