Farmall 350 - deep knock PTO

Once in the while I'll get a knock deep in the bowels of the transmission on my 350 related to the PTO. It always happens when the PTO is stessed - too sharp of corner with baler, the sickle mower has tripped etc.... Anything to worry about?

I ask because it seemed to happen a little more often today when I was mowing with the sickle bar and the mower had not tripped.....

If your Ujoints are not phased correctly, or positioned correctly at the hitch pivot point, the system will make radical knocking noise that at times can sound like t is coming from the trans, when it is really being made at the Ujoints. Look into phase relationships, maximum bend angles, (turn radius)and hitch position.
One other possibility could be a seasonal disconnect getting worn and starting to ratchet. Jim

If your doing tillage work, you normally dont need the PTO, so you can disconnect it for a couple of months or for the season !

Coupling to disconnect the driveline to PTO so nothing is turning inside the PTO unit on those models. Had to do it manually by removing a bolt, moving lever and reinstall bolt on bottom of the center section of the tractor. It moved one side of coupling on a splined shaft into or out of mesh with other half of coupling.
On a 350 the seasonal disconnect was a option. They came standard with a splined coupling to join the drive line.

This is on a fast hitch balanced head mower with the trailing wheel. Not a lot of bending going on with the PTO shaft. But I did run the baler for a while with the same tractor - no "knock" issues so it would appear that the mower is the issue.

By "phazed" do you mean the knuckles are alternated at the ends pt the PTO shaft?

To be in phase, the yokes on the same solid or splined shaft must be aligned (zero degrees, such that if it was without the crosses, it could lay flat on a concrete floor) is correct. Jim

Had the same noise on a 400 part of the time with using a mower probably like yours. Looked for a problem on tractor, only found a loose bolt retaining the PTO drive gear to front lower shaft. After repairing that it still made the noise sometimes usually at lower RPM when trimming around edges.

Thats it exactly. And I was getting the knock at a scary amount when I was finishing up and trimming around the field. I was releived when it didn't come back when I hooked up to the baler.
