F-12; over tires, pneumatics, or cut down steel with new rim

Brought home a 37 F-12 last week, it had been sitting in a barn untouched for the last 15 years. Clean points, fresh fuel, and new plugs got it running pretty easy (although smoky), new front tires, cleaned the bird poop off, and already hauled it down for our local show this weekend with my 35 F-20.

So I'm trying to decide what to do on the rear, can't really parade it with the rear steel although I like the look.

Right now I just plan to get it running better and replace/repair some bad parts (exhaust pipe, intake screen and cap, radiator overflow tube) and maybe repaint this winter.

You can run the steel in most parades in one of two different ways.

You can add a road band to the wheels so the lugs don't tough the ground or you can remove the lugs and run on the bare wheel. In either case you would want to some rubber tread to the bare steel for traction and a bit of cushion. Smooth steel on pavement in not good combination for traction.

Those wheels look to be in great shape. I personally like that original "classic" look and would not change them. Do as Owen Aaland suggests, get or make road bands if you want to parade it. I have a restored f12 with cutoffs and rubber. Its nice, but doesnt have the look yours has. My .02

I have a set of cut offs that are good with bad tires on them if interested in trading those steel wheels off. I have a 35 F-12 that I would like to put on steel if you decide to go the way of rubber.

If you remove the rear lugs a 38 inch tractor tire will fit perfectly.Measure from middle of tire out and cut both sides off, this gives a tight fit.Do not cut tread in half.Strech over wheel and drill holes and use short carriage bolts

I do agree it looks "right" with the steel and I think I would want to leave the lugs on if I built an over tire. $$$ says pull the lugs off and bolt some rubber on the wheels. I'm not opposed to cut offs or factory pneumatics but tires aren't cheap either. decisions

Well I do have one 18.4-38 BF Goodrich around but I'd have to cut it in half to use on both sides or look for a twin. I do have a couple 13.6-28s I could section up.

Thanks, Jeff

South central Michigan small town called Leslie. About 15 miles north of Jackson. Not sure on the width but they have the old 10-38 tires on them. I Have used them as mounted duals for years on my 43 H. I bought a set of clamp on 10-38 rims for it so will not need the mounted duals any longer.
