I am restoring a farmall M and need to know how to determine the year when the creal numer and other info rag has been removed

In the picture see the small square area above the magneto and magneto drive, also just above the side cover and down below the first spark plug. If you can get a engine serial number that's stamped in there we can at least determine the month and year engine was installed in the tractor. Provide it the original engine to the chassis that gives you month and year tractor was built.

That area where they stamp information on, is also called a BOSS, A term used in manufacturing and machining .

The number under the first spark plug is c-248. What info can you get from this number
Fan end of the engine is number one cylinder. If it has C-248 on the block where picture this has C-264 there's a good chance its a replacement block without a serial number. If the M is late enough to have IH disc brakes there's a small chance it could be a original engine. If its not a late one the engine will be no help.
Other picture is what date codes look like on castings. Date code in picture is on the engine block. It won't help if the engine was changed. Date codes are found on other castings and if enough are found in a certain range of months it gives a idea when the tractor was built. Month and day are the numbers and letter stands for the year. 39 M was I, 40 was J and progressed through letters to U for 51 and W was used in 51. X was 52. Some overlap happens on the castings, like a 49 casting can end up on a 50 model tractor. If a M has a later casting than X its a replacement part. In fact very few X castings are found on a 52 M. Lot are the previous year. Date codes on castings are when the casting was made.

Factory M engine has a serial number stamped in where the duck tape is in picture. Will have FBKM with serial number following. Can have suffix letters and numbers following that or below the serial number.
