Farmall 656

Hi, I just started working on my Grandpa's 1968 Diesel 656. My dad parked it about fifteen years ago due to injector pump problems, and a problem with the gear shift sticking in a particular gear. It has sat for the entire time while stuck in gear. I can get the tractor into neutral, but a I can't get the shaft out that shifts the tractor from gear to gear. I was wondering if anyone might know of a good way to get this shaft to come out. Thanks

Sounds like you have original style shaft. In that case you will have to drive the pin out of the inner end of the shaft to remove. I could show you how if I was there but forget which gear you have to put it in to see the end of the pin from above. If you really want to get serious about repairing it right I would take the steering flow divider valve off otherwise you are working in the dark half the time. Newer sh afts have square pin in shaft and you make a slot in the outer casting so you can remove and install with the pin in place. They also got rid of that one piece divider that wears out and use two dividers and a separate plate. There is a kit for this but the price is through the roof. That one piece divider is the main culprit causing you to get into two gears at once but even with the newer style it requires very careful adjustment of the shifting rods for a good neutral. Then, shift cautiously with out trying to short cut across before completely in neutral.

Common problem with that set up and there was a dealers bulletin years ago about that and it said you should move the shifter side to side every time you shifted it. Ran into that on a 656 I had in my shop not long ago. I poured a good bit of ATF in/under the shifter boot area and got it to free up some and the owner has gotten to to free up more by using it
