Is there any source out there that has a cheaper ball brg. For the steering worm shaft on an H other than CaseIH? I also was wondering why my batteries boil over on the 656 diesel. I have a new voltage reg. and alt. It seems to happen when using planter monitor for several hours. Thanks DTK

Should be a standard bearing, you can order from a bearing supply house if you have the bearing number. Batteries are being overcharged regardless of what is new.

It is a special thrust style ball bearing. Regular ball bearing will work but not last very good. On your batteries boiling, you need to know voltage output of alternator and are both batteries boiling. Some deteriorating batteries will not rise to what would be a normal regulator setting and boil. Also, one bad cell can cause other cells to boil.

Full Complement Deep Groove bearing. Motion Industries or Kaman Bearing have them for about 30 Last time I helped with one. Jim

I think I used a crossed number to another brand on my Super M. It fit but it was different from the original. I took it back and bought the CaseIH one. Occasionally the CaseIH one is needed, For most bearings on any IH tractor you can use others.

I will ck alt. out put. Maybe I have not kept water in them like I should and batts. Have deteriorated. It turns over and starts good though. Thanks for the input. DTK.

The design was different, CaseIH probably fit better than the other -- I was not sure, in a place like that means major (for me) disassembly I won't take the chance, the price is not that important. Read what pete 23 said.

Are you referring to the bearing that is two halves and balls sandwiched in the center? If so I ground the inside of the halves down to tighten the halves up on the balls and it worked like a new one. That was 10 years ago and steering is still tight.

I'm asking to learn. I figure the number will specify the thrust requirement. I know some replacements for transmission bearing have fewer balls, a little lighter duty, so they are not a direct replacement. If the ball bearing is ordered from dimensions, then the thrust capabilities would not have been noted. I've never had an issue with getting a match using the number on the old bearing, including worm gear bearings.
