H ignition problem

I am trying to help a friend of mine with his H. It has been converted to 12 volts with a solenoid & push button start. It also has a magneto which has been converted to a distributor with an external coil. The negative (output) wire from the coil is connected to the side of the mag/dist where I believe the ground/shut off wire used to be. The problem is that it wouldn't start until the starter button was released or the tractor was pulled. It had a 12 volt coil at this time. I put on a 6 volt coil & a resistor & a 12 volt bypass button for starting. It will start & run fine on 12 volts but dies as soon as the bypass button is released. The output side of the resistor reads 6 volts on my voltmeter but apparently that is not enough to make the tractor run. My electrical knowledge is limited & I'm probably over my head already but I'm looking for suggestions & any wisdom on magnetos converted to distributors. Thanks in advance. Sonny

I'm guessing but sounds like you have the mag conversion wired right if it will start and run with a bypass wire, problem is you don't have sufficient voltage on the main ign wire from the switch to the resistor to run the tractor, only thing don't make sense is you stated you can pull start it were you using the bypass switch for it to run then ? try connecting the main ign wire directly to the coil and see if it will start and run,if so voltage from switch is low or resistor is too much,if you used a ford solenoid you can connect a bypass wire from the R terminal to the coil and it will bypass the resistor will starting I done dozens of 6 to 12 conversions and on 4 cyl tractors the bypass wire isn't needed
