International Harvester Farmall M: I am looking for some help with a date of manufacture for my M. I bought the tractor in 1973, and the SN tag was torn off. These are the numbers I have. The old engine # is 6 722-DJ, 4-5-31-8. The frame # is 8026 DC, 6-24 S. Do any of the numbers have any relevance to determining the year of the tractor. Thanks for the help, Ellis

The 6-24-s indicates that component was cast on June 24,1949. The other numbers you posted are just part numbers. Number-number-letter is a date code, s is 49, t is 50, w is 51,x is 52
y is 53,z is 54.

6*24*S means June 24 1949, there should be dates on several large parts. The rest are part numbers.

Think you indicated the engine block was changed in another post, are you saying you still have the old block? If so get its serial number to find out the month tractor was built. Just above where the tin cover goes on the right side of the block. Toward the front look for a raised flat with serial number stamped in.
Think there's a chance the engine date code is 5-31-S and maybe the 4 doesn't go with it and the 8 is really a S. If that's true that block would fall into the range of other casting.
If the tractor was assembled in July or later there's a good chance of hitting what the tractor serial number was or close. Depends on having a original engine serial number.

D Slater: All those numbers were off of the old block that I gave away. I called the mechanic I gave the block to and he read those numbers to me. Thanks, Ellis

Ellis, you can check that casting between the engine block and the gas tank, that casting also has a date code, cast into it, i am sure that piece hasn't been changed !!!

You guys have really helped me a lot. I have ordered a new ID tag. What would you do, make up a serial number from that time period and stamp it, or just stamp the date manufactured? Maybe there are other options. Thanks, Ellis

Ellis: If you can get the mechanic to read the block serial number it would help. It won't match the tractor in 49 but there are records that give the month engine and tractor were mated.
It will look like this only on a place that looks like it on toward the front of block. Also the M block serial number will have letters before the number and a X1 after of below if it was gas.
