Model H without hydros

Hey guys, been lurking on the site for some time, and decided its time to join. I have a model H, mid 40s without 3 point or live hydros. I am considering adding live hydos to the tractor. Ive had the tractor for a few years, she runs great, but without a 3point, she is limited. Im not sure what kind of pump to use. Should i get a brand new one from Northern, if so, what gpm and size?, should i salvage one from the scrap yard?, could i get one from a model M and mount between the distributor? I would like to run a 3 point, and also have a hookup for an auxilary attachment. I can Fab anything in my shop, but the hydraulics are a little new to me. Any help would be great!

The H you own has a timing gear that is too weak to operate a hydro pump from the distributor location. In addition, the bolt pattern is not the same as the Super H or 300/350 series tractors. The possibilities are to replace the Cam gear with a late model (350) gear. Then use a Farmall 350 front cover and a rebuilt/new SH,300,350 (Utility or Farmall) pump. You will also need a pressure regulator a open center valve or two. and a reservoir. An alternate plan is to use a belt driven pump from the front crank pulley by adapting a second pulley to the original. A pump is still needed with bearings capable of side loading, not axial. Jim

I think I would use a pump from a 300-350 , I don't know
of M or SM pump will work? Maybe someone else can correct
me .

Wow that was a quick response! Thank you! It sounds like adding a belt driven pump will be the easiest option. Any ideas on what size, or GPM i should look for?

Shoot a belt drive power steering pump if done right with the right cylinder will work just fine. I have hooked up a Chev power steering pump in the past to get hyds on tractor that did not have hyds. Like the Farmall B I had that I built a belly mount sickle mower on and used a Chev power steering pump for the hyds for the lift

Check the prices of Super H, 300, 350, or 400, 450. You might be money ahead to trade up, or find an H equipped the way you want. If you are doing it for the experience, have fun.

The biggest problem is the reservoir. It needs to be higher than the pump. I ended up with a reservoir mounted in front nof the belt pulley. The problem is starving the pump and having air bubbles in the oil raising the oil level too high and running out of the fill pipe. I tried to use the belly pump for a reservoir but it would'nt work correctly. Al71.

You can also consider a 12v self contained unit. However I have a 3 point on an H running on the belly pump and it works for me. It even uses old IH cylinders.

Just use the belly pump. It wouldn't work with the clutch in but that's the easiest way. If you don't have a belly pump, they can be found easily. Its a bolt in operation.

The cost of adding live hydros to an H may not be worth it compared to finding a Super H. Plus it may look all butchered up by the time your done, if that matters.

Ya they work just fine and the belt on mine would slip before you ran into any over load problems
