Farmall 400 repower

I was wondering on my 56 farmall 400 if I could repower it with either a 221 or 263 6 cylinder and if it would fit or would I need to make or buy different frame rails to make it fit

You can do about anything if you set your mind to it....I would say yes,you will need to 'stretch ' and modify the frame rails.

BTW,I once saw a 450 with a large(from an F-8 Ford truck) flathead V8 in it. Got to hear it run,Even got to drive it around the guys yard

Just a dumb question , why put a 6 in place of a 4 that is
a proven horse , the 263-301 will have more horse power
but at a higher rpm ,but you will loose your engine driven
hydraulic pump . If I were looking for more power I would
add some in the 264 block , it's there just turn it loose!

It runs fine it has the overbite to crank it up to the 281 power but it needs a head job and I was thinking about turning it into a puller with a bigger motor.

Used to be 4 or 5 around here years ago with Olds. v/8's in them, think there's still one down the road a few miles

put a IH 345 v8 truck engine in it they fit have seen them. Also use IH 706 frame rails and bolt a 6 right in.

You may want to check with whatever club you want to pull with. Some of them either wont let a frankentractor like that pull, or they put you in a class with only frankentractors which usually limits your competition. But that depends on the area and club.

Remember that the reason the differential and finals had issues with the 460 and 560 was the increased power of the 6. Jim.

I would say that is a question of durability vs. ultimate strength. I agree that for a re-power like that the trans and final deserve more than a casual examination. One could certainly upgrade the bearings.

My wife's grandfather built this one with a Lincoln engine. I've had it torn down for a few
years now. Someday I am going to go through it one end to the other. When I had it running
when you would crack the throttle you had to hang on.
