M Farmall hydraulic issues

Hi guys, I need help with a problem on my M. I bought this tractor about 1974 and have had no major problems since but have not used it much either. It is a 1951 model and has the live hydraulic pump in front of distributor, like a 400 would I believe. The man I bought this from has passed away but he loved to tinker and probably put this pump on the tractor. He pulled a 4 row cockshutt planter with it. I have no hydraulic pressure at the outlets. I guess the old pump in belly is still there but unhooked. I have heard you can take the old pump out and just use space as a reservoir for hyd fluid. Is this true and should I do this and where should I start to look for hyd problems, could I have a hose stopped up? I thought that front pumps didn't give trouble. Help please and thanks for your help.

What are u using for a hyd reservoir now? Are you sure it's a 51, if it is then you should have the heavy [wider gears] and if it still runs your ok there. You could hook up the old belly pump, but that's only 800 lbs of pressure maximum. Maybe you sheared a drive key in the pump!!

The large hose coming off the pump is the "suction" hose, the small one is pressure. Check the large hose for obstruction or low fluid.

Getting it primed may be the hard part. what is being used as a reservoir now is a primary quwstion. If it is at or below the inlet to the pump, it will be hard to prime. Putting 10 to 15 psi in the full reservoir will force Hytran into the pump. If it has been run for years with no attention to level, it might have ruined the pump. If priming it doesn't work. let us know and we will go from there. Jim

my neighbor who knows a bunch about farmalls says it needs to be primed too. It has not been run low on oil so I will try to prime the pump. The old pump reservoir is the reservoir for the newer pump also so it is is below the front pump level. I will look and see about putting air pressure on the system. Thanks for your help.

Low air pressure applied to reservoir did not prime the pump, pump and remote valve (char-Lynn) seem to be warmer than I remember them being before. any other ideas for priming the pump? Thanks again for your help.
