wire wheeliing paint off my M engine block. everything closed today that is close that will have another wire wheel. i want to make some headway. Ya'll think a good or bad idea to sand blst the paint off of the block? im literallly in the shop, blaster outside and ready but wanted to check and get an opinion or few real quick, lol.

Do you mean the block by itself removed from the tractor?

You'll get a lot of opinions on this one. Personally I don't like the idea because of aerated grit getting into hard to reach
places and threaded holes and not being able to flush it out later. I don't like the idea of sandblasting assembled tractor parts
either although some blast the whole tractor.

I aleady started! just the block, im gonna water blast it after im done. wish caustic dipping was still allowed. but, tthe engine shop(only one around for miles) has a three week list and he prretty much hand cleans blocks now since the dip haas been outlawed. ill just have to be very thorough in my clean up on this block, then ill oil her up real good. rebuild kit be here end of coming week.

thanks

Some of the shops in this area have quit having hot tanks for regulatory issues. At least the farmall blocks do not have as many
nooks and crannies as typical automotive engines.

Duct tape is your best friend on this mission.
Seal anything that you feel probably shouldn't
have sand get into, unless you are have a set
of junk spark plugs, plan on a new set and
leave what's in it when you blast and paint.
Old distributor cap too. Don't blast the rad
or the carburetor. With a little care, you
really won't hurt anything and it'll look nice
when your done.

It turned out great. After sand blast I water blasted it, blew out all the ports, the water jacket come out cleaner than expected. I oiled all machined areas and used Ospho on the outside of the block to preserve it till I get paint on it.

I'm very happy with the outcome.

On a side note, I bought a cheap 20 gallon blaster. The tips are ceramic and the sand is ruining the tips in minutes. Any ideas what I can do about this? Maybe a new gun all together?

Making up a paste out of household Lye, then painting that on sure cleans up an engine, or anything else for that matter. Just want to be careful with the stuff, wear protection, then pressure wash off.

(quoted from post at 20:56:37 05/26/15) Making up a paste out of household Lye . . .
on't get the lye mixture on anything made of aluminum (serial plate, tags on starter, generator etc.). Same thing goes for oven cleaner.
