ih 424 brakes

thanks for your response. I don't have any really. I have the Case service manual but it doesn't have any info on rebuilding the brakes. Is there a breakdown of the brake system or a place I can look to learn?

This should help. The system is simple and similar to IH brakes designed in 1950. The two disks with fiber surfaces spin on the differential output shaft. the expander in the center (two plates with balls between them) is used to wedge the friction disks against the tractor and the inside of the cover/case. This also includes the surfaces of the expander which does not rotate. The thickness of the disks and wear of the metal surfaces cause poor performance. As they wear, the angle of the actuating links becomes less and less powerful on the expander. Thus, even if new disks are used, the wear on the surfaces will not be taken up. the total clearance between the stack of internal parts, and the mating surface of the housing to tractor must be in the area of .030 to .040". this is made by machining/or machine grinding the mating surface of the cover/housing. Lubrication of the expander and links should be PTFE based dry lubricant (spray like TriFlow). Jim

The Blue Ribbon service manual is about as good as it gets. The IT service manuals are OK and at times give a different perspective. This Forum is the source of the tips that can make a difference. The image was taken from the caseih.com parts listing The information came from my experience. Thanks Jim.

hey there. This forum is great. Thank you for your generosity with your time and experience.

I was able to pull the unit apart. I will order the discs. The rest of the unit looked ok. Any other tips?

When you get the new disks, be sure to measure the stack of parts by putting them into the outer housing in order of assembly then measuring from a straight edge down to the top disk. If it is more than .080" the housing needs to be machined to reduce it to .030. Jim

thanks. There was a bit of oil in the housing, from the bull pinion shaft?

I do not know on that model, but many of those can be removed from the outside using a metal screw in the tin of the seal and a small prybar to encourage its removal. Sometimes 4 screws are needed to pull incrementally on the edges to get it out. Jim

If the seals are leaking, you are in to a major job to get at them. You have to remove the bull gears to get the housing off. To get to the bull
gears, the hydraulics have to be removed. All ok if you have lifting gear, or a strong son in law who helped me a year or two ago!

I sent mine (on a 2424) out to my mechanic to do. But a few years later I did one side of a Case 700, which was quite similar in design to the IH 2424. You can do it, just take your time and look and think about how the pieces work together.

Tim

I ttok a look at the last plate of the brake housing. Two of the heads of the bolts are missing. Nothing is simple is it.
