Hole in sleeve

From reading some posts I believe the WD6 tractors were built with dry sleeves. To me that would mean if water can pass from the water jacket in the block into #1 cylinder both the block and liner are damaged. Correct???

Thanks

Hi
Not done anything with those motors here and not sure what you have done to diagnose yours, A crack in the counter bore and sleeve could be possible The other option could be bad head gasket or crack in the head, This could be the same for any type motor if you are getting water in any cylinders.

Robert, Thanks

I have pulled the head and can see a hole through the sleeve that goes into the water jacket. My thoughts are that if this is truly a dry sleeve engine there must be a hole through the block as well.

The block bore could be cracked, allowing coolant into the fit between the block and the sleeve. The sleeve seals to the head gasket, and unless it was also cracked at, or very near, the block crack it would not leak. Head gasket failure, or a cracked head is more likely in that engine. Jim

Hi From what you say it doesn't sound good for the block if it's got that kinda problem. I have heard of Perkins engines crack the blocks like that behind the sleeve. It must of frozen hard at some point to get a hole in.
Maybe sadly it's time to shop for another motor or tractor depending what the rest of it's like for being straight and good tires and stuff.
Regards Robert

Maybe I do not understand the difference between a wet sleeve and a dry sleeve. Does a dry sleeve come in contact with the coolant or does it press into a bore in the block? The thought being the sleeve could replaced if it was worn. Is the IH 248 CI engine a wet or dry sleeve engine?

Again,

Thanks

Pretty common for water inside the cylinder to freeze and burst the sleeve and block. Some have had some success gooping the hole up with JB Weld and slapping a good sleeve in. I guess you wouldn't have much to loose trying it. I know I owned an M once that I was told was repaired that way. It ran fine and never leaked while I had it.

A wet sleeve is one that has no parent block holding it in position. It is in cotact with the coolant on the outside and piston rings and combustion on the inside. It is sealed to the cylinder head (usually with a reinforcing ring) and to the bottom of the coolant chamber with (usually) an Oring (sometimes a compression ring or gasket).
A dry sleeve is a thinner sleeve inside a structural block bore (which is in turn exposed to coolant on its outside.
Dry sleeves are what is in your tractor. They also have a rim around the top creating a locational indes, and seal to the head gasket. Jim

After reading this, you might consider a different engine as a starting point. If the hole is big enough to see through I would consider it scrap. There are complete engines out there, the issue is expense. Gas start diesel run engines are expensive to buy running, and more expensive to rebuild. Parts are sometimes single source, and must be researched to find. Sorry for the bad news. I am a former MD owner (same engine) and mine was very operational. Jim

Thanks all,

I took another feel and found two layers of metal in the hole. One being the liner and the other being a hole through the bore in the block. No more mystery here. again Thanks

Don't give up on the motor. A block repair and a new sleeve and you are up and running. Of course you may need a new piston and rings. Other problems may include worn rod and crank bearings. Hopefully the head is ok .
