47 Cub Stops after running

Was mowing the other day and about 3/4 of the way thru, the Cub was running and then stopped. Nothing caught, everything free, just shut down. Had the tank a little low on fuel, filled up and tried again. Nothing, cranks over freely. (I hand crank to start, pops off right away)Let it set a couple of hours, started right up, made a few passes, the quit again. This time it was too late, went out the next morning, cranked it over and started right up. Almost finished mowing, then quit again. Didn't get back to it till today, now, no start. Am I missing something, got fuel, checked vent on tank, that's good. Haven't checked spark yet, what's the best way to check and proceed forward? Maybe coil, condenser, points? I'm venturing into foreign territory here, electrically wise. Thanks, Brett

Sounds like a coil issue. As they break down, the temperature rises and as they heat the reach a point that they quit. one way to point to it is the coil's temperature. When it quits, feel it carefully, if too hot to touch it is the probable cause. Take along a spair sparkplug WHen it quits, put the spark plug against the block and attach the coil high voltage wire to it. (in neutral) crank the engine to check spark at that plug. no spark possible coil. After these checks, let us know the outcome. Jim

a friend of mine soldered a wire to the base of a spark plug. i put an alligator clip on the free end. when i check for spark; pull plug wire off of a spark plug, insert onto the extra plug and clip onto a good ground point. pull switch on and crank engine , watch plug for fire. i have used this a lot.

i had a similar problem. turned out it was a loose wire on teh switch. i hot wired the tractor and it ran fine, before i found the problem and fixed it.

good luck

A condenser can do the same thing. Change it before you buy a new coil. I had an A that was consistent like yours. Swapped coils and that didn't help. Had a C which had a ring of debris floating around in the fuel tank. When it would happen over the fuel outlet the tractor would stall. It would float away after fuel flow stopped and tractor would start right up (not like a hot condenser or coil) and run for five minutes or two hours. I found it by trying to drain the fuel tank and it would only drain for a while. Fished it out with a wire, collection of fiber, hair, etc. probably PO checking fuel level with a stick.
