M belly pump

The M belly pump is leaking badly. I have another one that I removed from an old tractor in the late 70's. I don't know if it is good. I am going to try to swap with the leaky one, I guess just because I can. I would like to open it up first but I'm not sure what will happen. Can I take the (plate) off and look inside and maybe clean a little? Will 97 parts fly up in the air and come down on my head, and me with no idea how it goes back? According to my records I had the one in the tractor now rebuilt in 1979. I took it out and re-installed it myself. Any insight anyone has on the belly pump would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ellis

Probably a bad oil seal and maybe a bad gasket. There aren't any parts that fly around when you remove the plate. You do have to remove the coupler and it can be hard to get to move. Unless you have a worn shaft you should be able to do a new seal and gasket and be in good shape from oil leaks.

ususally its the seal at the drive coupling that leaks. get the gasket and seal, separate the resevoir from the pump, slip a brass flat bar into the pump gears and remove the drive. lefty loosey. put the new seal in , clean any goo out of the resevoir and re-install. there is a small fork that comes off the pump that hooks to the actuator rod , be sure to get that to hook up. easy fix.
