coil wiring

I have a tractor that is not starting. It would start when pulled and start on its own the rest of the day. I had the test light on the pos side of the coil and it lit up. It also lights up on the neg side. Does that mean the coil is bad or the elec ign. Thanks for any help.

Electronic ignition may timeout and shut off the grounding of the coil. This would allow reading voltage on both sides of the coil in a static test (not running or turning with the starter. if the cables are small, (as in automotive size 40 or even 30 the starter could draw down the total voltage enough to prevent starting. checking the battery for good starting amps is also important. If a test light hooked to the distributor side of the coil blinks when cranking or running, it is at least trying to make spark. Jim

Janicholson, are you saying the elec. ign is bad. I didn't check the dist. side when we were cranking but there is no spark when we put the coil wire to the block. The battery has the charger on it while we are working on it. The cables have been on it for awhile. This problem just started last fall and now it won't start at all. Thanks Ed

Not necessarily. Some electronic ignitions are made to avoid ruining the coil or overheating themselves. They do this by opening the circuit when there is no trigger signal. (engine is not turning, ignition on) some do not do this and will overheat the coil or self destruct if left on.
The test light hooked to ground, and touching the lead going to the distributor (side terminal), should flash on and off when cranking ignition on. If it just stays on when cranking, (good battery and cranking speed) the electronic ignition could be toast. If it flashes crisply, the coil might be failing. Jim
