Farmall M countershaft removal

Shift to reverse & lock the brakes. Weld up a socket with a piece of square bar stock to fit the groove & turn the wrench lefty-loosey.

As mentioned, the key stock idea works great. One time I found a 3/8 or 7/16 box end wrench would fit in the groove. Add cheater as necessary.

If the belt pulley/cover is off you can put trans in two gears and that will hold it as well.

doubt everyone has them laying around,
but scrounging around my shop. I found
an old leaf spring extend the shackles kit.
foot long shackle bar fit the slot perfect!
piece of cake then....

I have a set of those fancy pry bars that most of the tool companys sell and the biggest one fits the slot. Lock brakes, put it in low or maybe reverse and yank, mine wasn't that tight.

If the pump has jammed at some time, such as the high pressure release spring breaking and going through pump gears it may really be tight. Had that happen on H,and finally locked brakes, put in 5th, and put a pry bar through drive shaft, then used a 3 foot pipe on end of 3/4 drive ratchet to turn it. Bent the pry bar, but finally got it unscrewed. Neighbor was using his foot on the pipe extension while I was laying under it holding the socket with welded nut in place. Unscrewed it one click at a time for the full length, and that is a long thread. Needles to say the lug threads were shot. shaft threads were distorted a little, but still useable.
