Electrical problem

1946 M Farmall. The tractor cranks twice and acts like the starter hits something. Here is what I have done. I have three M tractors so I can switch parts sometimes as a way to trouble shoot. I have tried the starter from one of the other tractors and it does the same thing, so it ain't the starter, because it works well on the other tractors. I am very particular about these tractors. They all have professionally made cables (very heavy) with brass lugs, an almost new battery that cranks the other tractors well, and a really good charging system. The starters have all been rebuilt recently. The engine has 250 hrs. on an overhaul. If I sit on the tractor and try to start it long enough, it will eventually crank over fast and start the tractor. I spent three days raking hay last week and I am getting tired of parking it on hills. Dose anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Ellis

Try turning a revolution or two by hand the next time. Could have fluid over a piston. Or take spark plugs out to see if a difference.

Does it turn over with the ignition switch shut off. Sounds like advanced ignition unless it will not turn over any farther by hand when it stops turning. I had a customer bring his starter back two times to me and third time he brought the tractor. When he tried to start it while still on the trailer I saw it kick back. Readjusted the timing. The key is if it will turn over by hand or ignition off.

Timing, or firing order. Could be the timing advance parts (weights and springs) in the distributer are overly worn. Try swapping a complete distributor, just index mark them before you pull 'em.

Disregard my post, I interpreted it to mean the engine wouldn't make a revolution when cranked. Now notice you said it would turn twice before stopping.

Is it by chance a magneto with a 12 volt starting system? If not, check timing and side play in distributor shaft, or possible advance weights sticking in distributor.

Make sure the battery ground strap is bolted directly right to the starter mounting bolt. Can make a huge difference.
