need help with h timing with mag

Cannot get mag to trip on top dead center (first mark on front pulley) Went by the book, but mag will not trip by rotating away from engine block. Mag trips after both pulley marks have passed the pointer. Must be doing something wrong but don't know what it is.

The Drive gear in the front of the mag (where it meshes with the timing gears) may be off one tooth. Jim

When the rotor trips is it lined up with the tower as maybe those gears are off a tooth that drive the rotor. I make a mark on the body where the #1 tower is then removing the cap you can turn it over and see where it stops before it trips.
