What kind of tractor do I have?

Not sure what u got, If its a A, there should be a preface of FAA .FAI, or something other than a H, and i dont thinks its a H Farmall either.

If you have a Farmall A there will be a serial# below #1 sparkplug behind the rod from the throttle. It will start with FAA then numbers. Those an tell what yr.

I was told number was on steering housing and the plate reads International harvesters company Chicago Illinois serial number H4 53247. Was told last 2 numbers year. Will upload pictures of numbers I found when I get home, won't allow from my cell. Numbers on back of tractor reads 9090-0 or could b D.

The letter series, made 39-5?, consists of Cub, A,B,C,H,M. I'll include cub too since it looks the same as an A, but smaller.

cub, A,B are offset type, the driver sides on side of trans. Cub is a small tractor(can fit easily on a 4x8 piece of plywood), serial number is on the front on side under radiator. The A and B are basically the same, the B has a wider rear and narrow front, Both the serial tag should be on seat bracket, or on tray under the pedals (older ones).

C,H,M the driver sits on top of transmission. The C is the smallest, has lift arms on side under tank(unless hydraulic system removed). The serial tag is on toolbox under seat.

H and M are the same shape, M is slightly bigger. Both the tag belongs on bell housing on clutch pedal side.

Here's the Farmall A I bought in 1975. It was in sad shape and it needed tires, rims, steering wheel, seat, wiring
and the engine was stuck. It came with the 16-inch moldboard plow. Hal

You were told wrong. IH serial numbers never reflected the year directly like that. 9090D is a casting number for the belt pulley drive which
was used on the A, Super A, C, Super C, 100, and 200 tractors.

Ok thank you!

Your pictures are of an A (not Super A). Tractor serial number should be either stamped into the front edge of the floor pan (very early ones), or aluminum plate on the front of the left seat support.

It has Dzuz fasteners on the grille and hood. At least those are from an early model (39-40). Steering wheel and Culti A decals are not of that era but those are easily changed and could have been. No hydraulics usually indicates pre war.

Looks like an A. That 9XXXX number on the back is the pulley, gear box casting number. That H4 ... number is the distributor serial number

The engine serial number may or may not be the same as the whole tractor serial number. If it is the original engine yet chances are it would match

Here are pictures of where the serial tag should be.

The tag should look like this

Most have tag here on seat bracket on side with transmission

Some are under the pedals

Thank you so much for all the great information! My dad wanted to restore it but he got too sick. I know it will look great if someone has the time to put into it!

OK, here is what I see from the pictures. Some parts may have been installed after it was built or taken from another tractor. So there is some discrepancy in the details.

1) Clearly a Farmall A. The belt pulley housing is the later style, the PTO shaft is the larger 1 3/8 diameter. These changes were at serial 66671 (mid-1941).
2/3) Decals are replacements, so style is meaningless. Dzus fasterners on hood and grill, eliminated at serial 41330 (late 1940).
4/5) Magneto is an H4 with serial 53247, which was built in February 1940.
6) Cable type magneto grounding switch eliminated at serial 35260 (late 1940).
picture on other site) Tall style oil filter, eliminated at serial 97937 (early 1944). No starter hole in the bell housing, provision for starter added at serial 54387 (mid-1941). The shield below the platform is missing (could have had serial plate) so plate is either under the seat or missing. The engine number should be the same number.

Based on all the above, it looks like a 1940 tractor, built some time after February and before serial 35260. The pulley/PTO was added later on.

It has a generator bracket and one light, but no generator or battery box. Lights had probably been added at some point then not maintained.

If the engine is stuck, the value may not be much more than scrap value. If it runs or at least turns it adds some value. The rear tires show some cracking but not too bad. They add some value unless there is worse cracking where they sat with no air. It looks like a fairly complete cultivator, which has value in addition to the tractor.

I am in Ohio but the tractor is in South Carolina near Columbia. I am down there every week or every other week to clean up the property to get ready to sell so if you want more pictures just let me know of what.

A little too far for me to come for just an "A" having I can find those around here. Although yours looks to be in good shape considering. Send me an email....should be a link within the posting area. If we can come to a deal then post it in Craigslist. Shouldn't have any problems selling it

Where near Columbia? I live in the upstate and might could help you out if you need it on getting it running, etc. May even be interested
if the price is right.
