Stepped Pistons or Not?

I'm going to be dropping a new set of sleeves & pistons in my '47 A and was wondering what most of you were doing?

Obviously small gain in HP with the stepped pistons is nice but is there any down side (more finicky, harder to start etc)?

Thanks,

K

No get the RED POWER ones go to 3 1/8 You will like em ive done several. You mite need to go to a dist so you can advance the timing for starting i had to do that. There was a directive from I-H stating that. In my case i used a newer head with smaller combustion area. You will end up with around 22hp or better.

I guess I don't quite follow which ones you used? The plain flat tops of the stepped one, they're both 3 1/8" bore? I kind of think you used the stepped tops, to get to 22HP it seems like you would have had to...

I have a distributor all ready.

Think my Super C has fire craters in it and cranks good with 6 volt down to about 10 below 0.

If things are in shape that engine will start even below zero and if its that cold you probably wont be starting anyway. Bigger engines than that start on 6v even when we didnt have milti-grade oil and even now the batts are better than we had then.

I recently overhauled my A and put in stepped pistons. I keep all my tractors that originally had 6 volts at 6 volts. My starter spins over the engine so fast I wouldn't want it to crank
any faster.

What potential issues with 6 volt system? If you have cables of the right size and keep connection clean with a good battery you won't have any issuess. I have a 47 B that has the oversize Fire Crater kit and is mag fired and have no problems starting it in winter.

Absolutely go with stepped head pistons. I have 3-1/8", stepped head pistons in a B. Starts easy on 6 volts, runs great on a magneto, dynos at 24 HP.

I want an alternator that works all the time, 12V power for compatibility, smaller cables and a zippy start.

I have a 6 volt alternator on the B that is tucked right in the same place as the old generator and has worked fine since put on and cables don't get in the way of anything. I didn't have to change anything on tractor by using 6 volt alternator. If every thing is set right you don't need a zippy starter.

ounds like you have had some maintenance issues in the past. You may want to simply upgrade all the components at one time and be done with it.

This would probably help you out: UPGRADE ALL COMPONENTS

Well...Didn't mean to start a 6v vs. 12v debate.

None the less it sounds like the stepped top pistons will work well. Thanks for the feedback.
