IH Farmall 460 Transmission

I'm a little reluctant to get into this transmission. Is there anyone in Southern California who knows of a tractor mechanic who could do this work and who knows what he is doing?

As to my previous reply-I hope I did not scare you-it is actually very easy to check.Just park tractor on the level, unbolt shift lever cover, and slowly raise it up while watching under the cover that the springs do not stick to it as you lift it up.They should remain down in the transmission top. Then just line up the shift rails(where the bottom of shift lever goes).Good luck!Mark

Mark,
WOW! I decided to man up and take the transmission on. You are absolutely correct. I opened the top of the transmission first and saw one of the rails sticking out past the others. I knew this was the problem. I then removed the gear shift and examined the bottom of the shaft and determined it was in very good condition. After removing it I could see that the one rail was too far forward so I carefully tapped it back. I lined up the three rail slots, reinstalled the gear shift, lubed the ball on the gear shift shaft, and put it back together. Because this tractor has not been operated in years I think it may have stuck because there was not sufficient lubrication on the gears. But, it all works perfectly now and I will drain all the old oil and replace it with new. The book says 10 gallons with a Hydra-Touch and Torque Amplifier. By draining it all out and adding new I will then be able to see where the full line is.
Thanks a ton for your confidence. This is my second restoration and I am excited to continue the project. I really appreciate all the suggestions. Jack

I went back and found your previous post about 460 being stuck in gear. Is it a Farmall or International model. If Farmall, you can just take the shift tower three bolts out and see the shift rails. Nothing to get out of wack . Align them all to center of the neutral gates(stationary slotted part). The reason it got stuck in two gears is most likely the TA needs adjustment. The TA direct drive clutch has to release completely when pressing the clutch pedal down so gears can roll back releasing tension on them, same as when you pull TA lever.

Pete,
Thanks for the info. I finally pulled the stick and found that one of the rails was out of line. I removed the top of the tranny and saw the rail was extended and locked in gear. I lined up the three rails and put it all back together. I then adjusted the clutch first ands then the TA. Alls well as everything is in working order again. Thanks so much for your suggestion. Jack

For refilling something like a 460 I would go to Tractor Supply or Orschelns and pick up some 303 tractor fluid to refill. Much cheaper than modern Hytran and better than what filled it back in the 1950s.
