MW Pistons and 806 Head 263 Engine

My 560 Gasser threw a valve seat, went to have the head redone and it tested out cracked. The person who was working on it found an 806 head and we thought this would be a good match. What I
didn't take into account was the M&W pistons in the engine, the dome pistons are creating a clearance issue. Is there a way to keep the 806 head and shave the dome off the piston? Or possibly another
option? I don't want to add more $$$$ to the project with a complete overhaul since the block is in great shape. Thanks.

Gary, are you sure that isnt a L.P. gas head, either way the compression is going to be high for farm use, in my opinion.

I don't think it's an LP head, is there a definite way to tell? The tractor doesn't see much farm use, I have a 2250 quick tach loader on it (which is a nice match) and use it for pushing snow and misc. duties.

Check out the part number,is all i can say, i have heard of this happening on a 400 IHC engine. But cutting the tops off the tops of the piston, is a little dicey. Good Luck we all need a loader tractor. Look at the cavity in the head, if it is a LP head, it will be visabile to the naked eye.

The intake valve is larger of course, the cavity is visibly smaller. The numbers correspond correctly though. The guy that did the head for me will take on the cost and we will have to look for a head that works if need be. I am skeptical of shaving the domes to make this combo work. The tractor was pretty throaty before, and ran out great. Hate to ruin it.

Well i do not know what your problem is on the head as they all take the same valves that my parts book claims and in ALL THE GASSERS i have worked on i have never had and issue with valves hitting pistons or pistons hitting the head. Now not saying that the head your working with has not been milled down way past the maxium of stock removal and as to the head thickness on this i am not sure and i have never found any info on that as with some heads the give you a min. head thickness allowed . I know i have shved off a total of .035 off one 706 head over the years to get it flat . Because when i mill a head i STAMP how much i have removed . Now how much was removed BEFORE i got into that 706 i have no idea , but i am sure that at some point in time it had the head done atleast once .

Gavin, unless the block has been decked, on your 560,that would be a new set of variable. That's when they shave the block down. That's a possibility .

There are two different castings used for those gas engine heads. The 460 & 560 engines used different shaped pistons than the later engines with the later style head casting. The pistons must match the head.

In my opinion pushing snow is farm use, Just a L.P. head is 9 or 9.5 to 1, then u put the M @ W dome pistons in there your going to be near 10.0 to 1 compression ratio, way to high for farm use,Its going to ping ,And detention is tough on any engine, especially that 4 main brg engine, Sorry i got to say it like it is.

Fastfarmall, my m has flattop pistons, was thinking of going with the stepped piston overhaul kit. Will be farm use machine...is it possible I can use these pistons and change nothing else and it still be a safe compression ratio for farm duty?

460,560,660 use a open chamber head. All others that I know of use a closed chamber head. The dome is most likely hitting the head not the valves. I have milled .100 off heads and had no problems. I would not mill the domes down, that would be alot of extra work & expense. Tractor pullers are always looking for 806 heads. 560 heads are a dime a dozen. Sell the 806 head & buy a 560 head and have money left over.
