I found this photo an a WW2 website and thought you guys might like it.
The caption on it says:

I think there were at least a few tractor companies that made towing tractors for the military. I had a Case. I think it was a model 340, not sure. It had no 3PH or PTO just a basic tractor similar to the 310 but with turf tires.
 
Looks like they had there own tread pattern for pulling airplane's also, But i can see where a R-1, wouldn't be good.
