Tune up question

When you change points should you always change the condenser at the same time. I've got a 184 Cub that runs OK but last week looking over the tractor I found the points in pretty bad shape. I filed them to better condition but I'm planning on replacing them when I get a new set. I bought the tractor last fall so I have no idea the last time the tractor was tuned up.

Condensers are the most unnecessarily replaced item in automotive/tractor/truck history. In 1935 condensers were made from inferior materials, and replacing them was SOP. How often do you change the capacitors in your TV monitor, computer, or microwave. Never. Unless the points are showing serious pitting and are not extremely old, leave it alone. I hav been required to change them and found as many bad new ones as bad old ones. (3). Jim

I agree condensers are the most over replaced item during a tuneup. I understand the new ones of late are a real problem so I just plain don't replace them unless I have to.

The condensor is the brain of the points,it holds the electric current for the points.
I have tested several and very seldom do I find a bad one.

My H used to burn up points pretty quickly. One of the old mechanics in the neighborhood said to add a second condensor. The last time I had a set of points go bad the spring broke.
