'new' 460 gasser stalling under load

Recently aquired this 460 farmall with a 2000 loader as a 'parts' machine from someone who was tired of working on it. Been an older Ford person for years (8n/9n) but newer to the older farmalls.

What I know so far from the previous owner.
- TA is non-functional (the link from the lever to the clutch housing is missing)
- side cover on the engine block is leaking
- power steering pump/worm drive in front under the radiator/coil is leaking
- manifold butterly/heat riser is stuck and/or missing. spring is rusted solid and no weight on the back.
- tractor stalls under load then takes 5 minutes to start again
- Front belts need replacing

Started tearing into it tonight and found that fuel flow with the sediment bowl removed is really slow (15 minutes to fill a quart jar.) Guessing crud in the tank or something stuck in the strainer assembly. Seems this could explain stalling under load.

Took the oil bath apart and found it full of wheat!
Mice storing up for a cold winter day. :)

Questions:
1. Any good way to clean the wheat kernels out of the air cleaner assemly without taking it apart? I have it soaking in kerosene overnight. Maybe replacement from a salavge yard? How restricting would the wheat be? Certainly don't want any finding their way to the carb.

2. Looked in the gas tank, saw a little rust but not as much as I have seen on some 8n's. The strainer assembly doesn't have a vertical screen sticking up into the tank like some of the Ford's do. Is this by design? I don't see that verical screen on the 460 parts diagram. Are there after-market strainer assemblies that have this? Is it even a good idea?

3. How important is the heat riser is it is stuck, missing and/or non functional?


Starting with the fuel and the air cleaner then going from there.

9nMike; it is obvious to me that your first issue is the incorrect fenders on your 'parts' 460 gasser.

The wheat issue; just my thought, the beer you could have make will really taste like sh-- now. With the kerosene soak, it may make removal more difficult as the wheat will be sticky. Possibly using a pressure washer in the upper horizontal inlet will blow the mice food bank clear. A friend cleaned mine in his parts washer to remove oily gunk.

My shiny gas tank does have a small vertical screen in the tank. Farther down the fuel system; if you remove the fuel line from the carb, your tractor [b:af1ef2e74c]should[/b:af1ef2e74c] have been delivered with an in-line cylindrical screen that [b:af1ef2e74c]should[/b:af1ef2e74c] now be crud filled.

You being a tractor guy have already assumed a carb rebuild is in order.

Thanks for sharing the photos but...going back to my coffee and polka music; the sight of those fenders is making me ill.

With a parts manual or the CNH parts diagrams that are available on line, you are well ahead of the game. A salvage yard trip should easily find you the missing TA link. Correct fenders will be more difficult to find and co[b:af1ef2e74c]$[/b:af1ef2e74c]tly. Good luck on your project.
 
I wouldn't worry too much about the wheat. A few kernels stuck in the mesh aren't going anywhere. Steiner sells a screen you can stick on the fuel inlet riser.
 
Thanks for the replies. Yeah, was wondering about the fenders, looks like they are from a later era. They did do a good job in attaching to the axle however.

No beer plans with that wheat, haha.

Took the fuel bowl apart and found the inlet from the tank to the top of the fuel bowl was full of crud, the gas was just dribbling out.
Replaced the strainer/bowl with a new one and fabricated with a new rubber fuel line. The steel line had several crimps and/or kinks but wasn't leaking (yet.)

Drained the tank and found the crud in the tank seemed mostly organic and not metal. A few small sticks and leaves with some smaller material. The stuff plugging the old strainer also seemed non-metallic.

The mesh into the carb was actually clean but a carb rebuild will be on the agenda soon.

Result....
The tractors runs great! Really like the sound of that 6 over an older Ford 4.
Was able to climb some hills and move some dirt around without any hesitation.
Will get to try some tilling later this week.
Heat riser doesn't seem to be affecting anything but it was 80 and dry today.

Other stuff:
Geneator belt is fraying, fan belt is fine. Looks like both just slip over the fan blades.
Pushrod cover is leaking. Need a gasket and screws, online parts diagram is very useful, thanks.
Power steering feels like it has gravel in it, a little hard to turn. Might be low on hydraulic fuild all around. Seems to get better though as the tractor warmed up.
Plugs are D15Y and look clean on the ends.
Really like being able to raise and lower the drawbar. Fasthitch instead of 3 point, most of our stuff is trailer type so that is fine.
There is a big box/bolster that limits the side to side play of the hitch. Looked at other pictures of fasthitches and others don't seem to have that setup.
Have to disconnect the bucket hydraulics (and chain the bucket to the loader arms) to use the rear remotes.
Could use a rewire all around, temp and fuel gages are non-functional. Temp guage easy to replace, might have to run a resistance test on fuel sender someday.

Fun project, great weather this weekend.

Going to put in 5 or so acres of organic buckwheat next weekend for the local bee population.
