Questions about TA in 560's

I have a 560 diesel & the TA is not working. I can only work the tractor with the lever forward (direct). Pull the stick back & forward motion stops. Dumb question here now....When the TA goes out on these models is it common to only have the stick forward to work tractor or have you heard of guys saying they only have the TA side & no direct or high? I'm assuming mine is typical. Anyhow, how easy is it to repair to have this working properly? Thanks

If the TA is out you will only have direct drive. I have never heard of somebody being able to use only the TA side. So yes yours is typical. The last TA I had replaced was about $1200 in my 57' 450. Not sure about the 560 but the 450 had to be split. I had the clutch replaced as long as it was open. No point in having it split only to keep the old clutch in it.

Thanks Farmall43. Makes sense to have the clutch looked at too if I need it split. Pedal is getting near the end unless I have some adjustment that can be made. I really like this tractor & it's certainly worth the repairs. I'm very impressed how how economical it is to run.

you have a normal situation. use it that way and don't worry about that ta lever, just lever b. those T A's on them old tractors are only there to prevent manual down shifting on a heavy pull. when you feel or see the tractor RPM dropping you PULL the TA back then once you get through the heavy spot you return to direct drive. other that that leave them alone. don't forget you have hydraulics so you can lift up your cultivator or plow an inch or two in a tough spot also. I have worked with these 560's and 660's for years and years with no T A. it is also handy for square baling also when you come to a heavy windrow. other that that there is no reason to need it or use it. most of these old tractors are chore tractors now so that definitely means you do not need a T A. ,other than if you just want to spend money and get ta experience.

The TA is well worth fixing. It is a clutch saving device in that the down shift using the TA prevents a full power start from stopped when shifting the 5 speed to a lower gear. The TA direct clutch can go out and if it does, it will only work in reduction (lever back or forward would make no difference. As the direct clutch fails, the direct speed slows under load until the speed slows TA to speed. As this happens, the TA clutch is burning up. It usually is the result of an operator moving the lever slowly into direct (wrong move) I have a 350 U with 10,000 hrs and the original TA. It has been Used very hard all its life. Jim
