656 gas engine missing/roughness under high speed load

My 656 gas has a miss/stutter/roughness under high speed load. Today I was disking and it was very noticeable.

If I slow down to half throttle, it goes away. Under fast throttle with no load or a light load it runs just fine.

I'm not getting any black smoke out of the exhaust. It's almost as if it is running lean. This is the IH carburetor with the fuel solenoid shutoff, so I can't do anything to increase the main mixture.

Tractor had new points, plugs, etc. last fall. When I was hauling grain last fall I didn't notice anything.

Could a wrong type of spark plug cause this? The plugs I put in last fall were part of an ignition tune-up kit I got from the local farm supply store.

I've double checked the fuel line strainer and fuel tank sediment bowl. Air filter replaced last fall.

My Farmall M had symptoms like this once. It was caused by the valve clearance being tight. I took the rocker cover off on the 656 but valve clearance was ok.

Any advice on what to look for next? Thanks!

You cannot run cheap gas in those ih six cylinders when working them hard. Put some 93 octane in it an see what happens. Spark plugs will affect the combustion take a plug out and see if it's running cold (dirty oily) or hot (burnt brownish look) but I would try better gas first. Is it real cold natured when you first start it? If it starts and runs good cold it's out of time, advance it a little. Point gap has to be set just right and don't rule out a bad condenser.

Todd:

Thanks for the advice. I actually run 93 octane in it.

It starts and runs cold just fine. I'm going to check the plugs, and maybe try the timing adjustment you recommend. I have a spare condenser and will pop that in also. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Any more I keep the old condenser in and keep the new one as a spare. I have seen a lot of the newer ones not be any good. Also, are the flyweights in the distributor oiled enough that they can move?

If you need to test if a richer mixture helps or hurts, you could try closing the choke just a bit at a time.

Did you keep your old plugs (exact same replacement)? If they are not the exact same I'd try cleaning them and putting them back in. Otherwise if it sat for the winter I'd be thinking clogged or partially clogged fuel jet.
