Farmall M clutch

Well, am finishing up a year long restoration of an M. Complete engine rebuild, started it today for the first time. Runs like a swiss watch! But attempting to put it into gear, the clutch is obviously not releasing as I can't get it into gear (gears grinding). It doesn't feel like I have enough pedal play (about 1" free play until I feel throwout bearing contact clutch, but then only about another 1" of clutch pedal). What the heck could I have put together wrong? I can't pull the liftall and take a look for a couple days, but it's driving me crazy sitting here contemplating what it could be. I would add that the clutch worked fine before I tore everything apart. Any ideas?

I put my H back together, and I reversed the 4-bolt wavy steel coupling that connects the short drive shaft to the transmission. It will go in backwards, it will go in there just fine, but the drive shaft will just not go into the pilot bearing and it will fling itself around and tear things up rotating out of place. Don't know about the M, but you might check the wavy 4-bolt coupling gizmo. Mine had to go in with the maximum possible spacing in it, not close-coupled, in order to engage the pilot bearing. {And I know that makes no sense, but it's the best say I can describe. ] M might be completely different.

Thanks, but that coupling is one thing I never took apart. I know what you mean, I took one apart on one of my H's once. Took me three tries to get it back together right. Now I know a digital camera is your friend during disassembly.

IT will go in, but will usually not release and will always cause drag and noise as the hub/springs rake the tops of the FW bolts. Jim

Well couldn't stand it, made time this morning to tear down clutch. Clutch disc was in the right way, but it's BENT (concave). I must not have had it lined up properly when I installed the engine and forced it. Looks like I need a new one.
