Farmall 656 slow 3 point hitch

Hello out there. I have recently acquired a Farmall 656. When I first got it the 3 point would barely lift. I put in a new hitch pump, New filter and new fluid overfilled to stop the air sucking issue. Now the lift does what it should except when the control lever is moved to the raise position there is a pronounced delay before the lift cycle begins. Anybody out there had this same issue?

I had a 666 do the same thing. I took out the unloading valve and cleaned it. Flushed it out with brake clean, changed the O-ring and coated it with hydraulic fluid and put it back in. All is well now. It is located under the seat. The seat has to come off and then the plate underneath it and the unloading valve is behind a snap ring.

You have a problem with the unloading valve. Might be sticky, leaking o-ring or partially plugged orfice in piston. Can look it up in online parts catalog to see what and where it is in draft control valve.

Thanks guys I pulled the hitch valve today and opened it up. All looks well except the unloading valve looks like it's been sanded with coarse sand paper, the bore it works in is smooth. Also the o ring on the plate that holds the unloading valve in looks like a rat chewed it up. Would you guys just put new o rings in or strongly consider a new or different unloading valve considering its condition?

That chewing up of the o-ring is caused by movement of the end cap or , possibly, too small thickness o-ring. I never did this on that particular part but sometimes you can make a shim to hold the cap solidly and still get the snap ring in, maybe with a little persuasion. Leakage at that o-ring could also have been your problem and I would try that before trying to get a new valve, just polish it nicely.

Thank you for the advice. I have all new orings coming from case ih. I'll give that unloading valve a polish and see how it works.

Pete even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. Ha ha. I only wish that I had your knowledge. Your replies are always informative and well mannered. Always read your posts. Thank you for teaching the rest of us

Well said! There are some knowledgeable guys on here that go out of their way to help. Thank you to those guys out there who get to the point instead of fueling the fire for more guessing!
