Farmall Lights (again)

I am still working on connecting up the lights (six volt) on my Farmall 340. It is a 1960 model. I have taken the sheet metal off but it is hard to see everything under the dash. I do not have the steering wheel off (do not want to break anything). I have found some cut wires but I cannot tell if they lead to the light switch. I put in a fuse and turned on the light switch thinking I could use my volt meter to see which wire come from the light switch. However, pretty quickly I had some smoke coming from under the switch. Looks like the spring like piece (resister??) under the dash had turned red hot. It probably was burning off the accumulation of grease and grim on it over the years. But, I assume this is not normal. What did I do wrong...and any advise on how find the right wires? Thanks in advance.

If the resistor is warming up, but no lights, I will asume a short between the switch and lamps. If extra powerful lamps are used, the resistor will fail. I would check for shorts to ground by removing the bulbs and checking the resistance to ground with the switch off. if shorted, resistance will be near zero. Jim
