Farmall H cam and idler gears

Morning folks,

two quick questions (which may not have quick answers)....

First, how important is it that I remove the Cam gear for a rebuild? My reading on the topic seems to indicate that it is pressed on, though some say it comes off with little to no effort. I don't have a 1-7/16" socket to get the nut off, so when I take the motor to a machine shop for cleaning and new cam bearings, they can just take care of it (for a fee of course), right?

Second, on the idler gear, the shaft has a single pin (with a hole for another). Does it matter that there is only one? If I remember right, there is no timing or anything to the idler, so its position when re-installed doesn't matter that much. Just want to confirm.

thanks!

If the camshaft and cam gear are to be used again, no need to remove the gear from the cam. Just remove the assembly from the engine.

On idler gear, one pin only. Other hole is lubrication to idler bushing. Has to be installed so as to not block oil and it is off set a bit for proper installation if I remember right. Only reason to remove gear on camshaft would be to replace camshaft, gear or worn plate..

1 7/16? I'l bet a 1 1/2 " socket will fit/work. You can buy a new one from TSC,AutoZone,etc for under 10 bucks.1 1/2 is a common
size.If you dont have a 3/4 drive ratchet,get a 1'2X3/4 adapter.

Thanks all for the advice. I havent messed with it today, been stuck in Chevy Silverado wheel bearing hell... Anyway, I've decided not to take it off and just let it be... no need to mess with it as most have said.

I appreciate it as always!
