H crankshaft pulley nut

Does anyone know what size the nut is on the crankshaft pulley? I dont have easy access to my parts list and the online parts store doesn't give that detail.

I've been trying to get it off for a few days now with lots of penetrating oil, and a large adjustable wrench, but I cant get enough bite and want to try and find a socket. I put a cheap HF digital mic on it and it came back with around 1.704", of which the closest fractional size would be 1 45/64"... never seen a socket that size..lol.

thanks in advance!

Take a hammer & chisel to remove the nut. Take it to your local truck parts store and get a wheel bearing socket to fit. Or make a socket of your own.

1-11/16 or some 1-3/4 if beat up, thick paint or rust. If getting one size socket 1-3/4 will take them off.

Thanks for the advice. I do have the locking tab bent back so it should spin freely. Lesson learned here that I should probably have removed the pulley before I removed the engine from the tractor.

I wouldn't say that. Doing it in the tractor you don't have much room.

FYI the Harbor Freight 1" socket set sockets aren't really deep enough to do a good job. You will need to buy a different one. The HF would need about .250 taken out of the inside to fit the entire nut. Someday I will mill out the bottom of mine.

get a socket that fits and use 1/2 " air impact, fastest and easy. those nuts are not that tight usually. other wise fooling around with open ends or rachets are a pain as the engine will turn. crecents are out of the question.

Again, thanks for the good advice. A crescent is out of the question, but it's all that I've got at the moment to try and break it free. I've given up for the time being until I can find a deep socket that either fits, or has enough meat on the inside to be enlarged enough to fit.

I really hadnt expected the nut to be on so darn tight, it just will not budge. I'm sure that heat would help, but I dont have a good setup for that.

This is somewhat preventing me from proceeding with tearing down the engine for rebuild. If I ended up removing the nut forcefully (breaking it off with hammer/chisel as was suggested earlier), I should be able to get a suitable replacement, right?

thanks,

I think he was talking about whacking it with the chisel to get it off, not to break it. If you whack it good it will start moving and then you are home free.
Air is the key. I forgot that I went to the neighbors to get their impact for the job. Rustred told me how to do mine, too. :)
You are wasting your time fretting about the project until you try air and a socket. You can use the HF socket (I did) but it only grabs half the nut. If it was super stuck it would be a good way to strip the nut, but mine didn't.

Thanks sflem849. I have the HF electric impact driver, I'll give that a try. My air compressor setup doesnt have a big enough tank to do much good for long... I can barely remove lug nuts from a vehicle with the air, whereas the electric driver works pretty well.

Just confirming, the HF socket - you used 1-11/16 or 1-3/4"? I think they are pretty cheap, so I may go ahead and get both just in case but was curious.

thanks,

If the nut is in good original condition a 1-11/16 fits. My 1-11/16 socket fits pretty snug on the nut. Find them often that have been beat or chiseled and out of shape.

Woo woo! I got it off. Thanks for all of the advice. I ended up getting a 1-11/16 socket as suggested and used my impact gun to get it off. Only took a few seconds and it came loose.

One thing I noted is that while the 1-11/16 fits, its loose.. maybe a fraction of an inch, but I put a plastic bag over the end to keep the socket from getting dirty and that helped snug it up. I'm taking the socket back... $22 is steep for something I dont plan on using much).

thanks again for all the help!
