Recently picked up a nice 826 with the German Diesel. Haven't gotten manuals yet, so I thought I'd ask here.
Problem is that the tach doesn't work. I started there- took the cable off the back of the tach, it's not turning(with engine running of course). So I took the other
end of the cable off of the 90-deg drive adapter on the front of the engine- the cable seems fine. Took the 90-deg adaptor off, and turning it by hand it seems to
function like it's supposed to- when I turn the input, the output(cable side) moves.
The input of the adapter is a flat shaft. I took a mirror and looked in the hole the adapter screws into with the engine running and the slotted piece in there that
drives the adapter is turning. But I put the adapter back on the engine, started it, and the output end of the adapter isn't turning.
Since I don't yet have a manual, and can't find a parts diagram online, here's my question- the 90-deg adapter has a jam nut on it so that it can be locked into the
proper angle for the tach cable. On this tractor, between the adapter and the front cover of the engine where it screws in, there's a brass "bushing", with male and
female threads, about 3/4 inch long, between the adapter and the front cover of the engine, that spaces the adapter out. Is this bushing supposed to be there? Or is it
something someone added, maybe to keep the hours from adding up?
Or is there something else that "usually" goes wrong that causes the tach not to work? Thanks!
