SMTA Serial number tag question

I'm swapping out the incorrect ta section of my smta. I found a correct one with a good serial number (66xxx). My question is there is a D above the number and an S after it. The S suffex doesn't bother me. I'm wondering about the letter stamped above it. I'm not going to get it if it was from a diesel. Is that what the D signifies?

Yes the D on a different line, usually over or above the serial number was a Diesel. Do you have a original engine serial number?

There is no engine. I do have a related question though. Did IH have separate serial numbers for the diesels or were they mixed in with the rest of the run?

They were mixed in. Gas or diesel could be built on either side of the serial numbers. Low ratio of diesels to gas means the chances or a non diesel being built next to each would be greater.

Interesting. I'd have figured they'd have had a completely different category of numbers for diesels. I guess the numbers were so few they didn't want to bother with the paperwork.

IH done the same on other tractors. MD chassis serial numbers as one example followed the non diesels. That's why M non diesel engine serial numbers kept getting lower than the chassis numbers over the production period. Every time a diesel was put in a M chassis that moved the non diesel engine serial number to a higher chassis number when a gas, distillate or kerosene engine was installed. Most early M tractors built started off with matching engine and chassis serial numbers. Diesels started in 1941 and by the end of M production the chassis and non diesel engine serial numbers were 13,000 apart if I remember correct. Could be 14,000, would have to refresh my memory on that.

I looked through my parts book and there's no separate part number for a "diesel engine clutch housing" that I can see.

Outstanding. Thanks Mr. Slater. Your are a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate your sharing of a portion or two!
