working on a small tractor. it has a front bucket. bucket lifts, up and down and tilts. hydraulic control valve handle is broken. called tractor supply and woman does not know any more about what is required than i do. sigh. web page speaks about spools and 3 positions and 4 positions. can someone explain to me what i need to replace this?

The simple answer is: A new handle!

Hydraulic manufacturers generally use as many common parts as possible, so it is highly likely that the handles are IDENTICAL whether the valve is "3-way" "4-way" "single-acting" "double-acting" "open-center" and/or "closed-center."

All you need to know is the brand and possibly model of the valve, go to a hydraulics supply, and buy a new handle.

It is probably simpler and cheaper to make something if you've got any fabrication skills at all. Just copy the other handle that's there.

Why would you call tractor supply? They have a few basic parts in stock to get you going on a Sunday afternoon in a pinch, but the employees aren't tractor experts or hydraulic experts. A machinery dealer would have been much more helpful.

True, they admitted it when they opened a store where I live. However they have a pretty good selection of the simple parts for hydraulics. 2,4-D, Roundup herbicides which require tractors, small implements -- I bought a 3 point 6 ft tandem disk from them last month, etc.

Positions....the number of functions the spool will do.
4 position.....raise, lower, hold, float
3 position.....raise, lower, hold
2 position.....raise, lower

Ways
4 way.....double acting cylinder can be operated
3 way.....single acting cylinder can be operated

The number of circuits is the number of spools i.e. loader, Boom....Bucket so two spools.
Likely you will want the spools to be parallel and not series.
Parallel means both spools can get pump flow at all times.
Series means that the first spool will cut off all flow to the next one when the first is being used.
The second will be dead until the first is returned to neutral.
