There are a number of way you can add hyds. One would be to use a hyd pump from a Super A. Or a PTO pump or a belt drive pump. As for a loader I think there was one made to fit a Super A I know there was one made for the Cub. As for being worth it well ya it would be better then a wheel barrow but that is about it and it will be hard to steer and hard on the front end

No you can't use a pump from a Super A unless you also use the whole engine. There is no place to mount the pump on a 1940 A engine block.

Loaders for As exist but are far and few between. Wagner, Henderson, TwinDraulic are brands I know of. Most of these used a Charlynn PTO-driven hydraulic pump. The shortcoming of that is you lose hydraulic pressure any time you push the clutch. That said people figured out how to cope and make do, because it was still far better than a pitchfork or shovel.

It will be easier finding an A with a loader already on it than finding just the loader, but if you're going there you may as well look for a tractor that's better suited for a loader than an A.

Your best way is find a loader first as that will be hard to find. Then you can add a hy pump. You can run a pump off the gen belt by making a mount and getting longer belt. You can also run a pump in front of the grille hooked to the crankshaft. Best would be find a Char-Lynn Power Pac it will have the pump, control single and two way pressure and resivor all in one unit and run it off the PTO but the problem is finding one made for an A as a loader for one will be very very scarce and any other loader just wont work without tons of re-work. Your best bet is finding another tractor with a loader already there

This works. This setup has downforce on a 3 pt. that will lift the rear of the A off the ground. A Saginaw "canned ham" power steering pump works good.

(quoted from post at 17:56:19 04/21/15) How can I put hydraulics on my 1940 A Farmall tractor and can it handle a front end loader

Here's a picture of one on a farmall H I got a friend who tried to sell me one with distributor I just didn't need it. This does not have its own hyd reservoir. Sorry I thought I read H don't know if this would fit on an A

Thanks for the info. And pics. From the pics I think I can fab something to work. I would find another tractor with a loader attached but I don't have the dough to purchase one yet so I'll have to make do for now.
