Charlyn power steering

assembling parts to put Charlyn power steering on my SMTA had some questions. in the directions it says to put a spacer between the torque generator and it's mounting on the gage cluster. Bates lists the spacer but says it is not available, how thick is the spacer? I originally was thinking of using my lie pump and flow divider but now leaning toward a separate pump. will most automotive power steering pumps put out enough GPM and pressure to operate the torque generator? What pumps have people used, ie make of vehicle?

I put a saganaw pump from a old 70,s chevy on my A jd and powered a behalen power steering. works good so I think that the same will work an a charlyn and a farmall. Bob

You will be happier with a separate pump. Had a 70 JD with a Charlyn and flow divider and when using hydraulics power steering would't work as well. Have a Charlyn on a 770 Oliver with what looks like an Ford pump. Pulley is smaller than what you than what you would find on a car or pickup. Probably to run the pump faster with the slower tractor engine.

I also mounted a pump from a 70s Chevy on my tractor and it is perfect for the Char-Lynn unit.
The pump has the built-in reservoir and dip-stick. I made steel lines from 3/8 brake line and flared the ends. I think I had to braze a patch over one of the holes in the reservoir, can't remember why, tho.

the original pump char-lynn used was an eaton. it is still available from napa. the napa part number is nsp846551. it does not come with the resevoir, i do not know if still available. there is also a filter inside the resevoir, napa part number 1653. the mounting bracket for the torque generator is a different mounting bracket that holds the temp and oil pressure gauge. steiners used to sell them, not sure if they still do.

Dad bought a 1953 JD 60 in 1958. Dad wanted PS installed so the dealer gave him his choice of a separate pump or split off from the tractor pump. Dealer recommended a separate one. Being a kid and not knowing much about hydraulics at the time, I didn't realize until about 1963 when I bought a '55 Oldsmobile, the pump looked like the same Saginaw pump. It worked great. Years later when visiting one of my uncles, I realized he now had that tractor and the PS was now plumbed to the tractor pump... said the other one went bad... this was probably about 1969/70.

If the steering isn't working as good when you use the hydraulics, it means you hooked the steering to the wrong side of the priority valve. It should be connected to the priority circuit.

Also, any old power steering pump puts out plenty of pressure and GPM. Whatever you can find at the junkyard will work fine.
