Farmall H - manual for rebuild

Hi,

My wife's 91 yr old uncle recently passed away and the family is going to give me his '42 H that he bought new back then. It's running but in pretty rough shape and from past discussions with the uncle before he passed it sounds like a rebuild is in order. What would be the best shop manual(s)to get to guide me through the process. I'm new to Farmalls (have a couple of Fords; a '52 8N and '59 861). Also, I'm reasonably mechanical but I've never done a rebuild so any advice on this would be most welcome.

Thanks,

DD

There's an engine rebuild DVD from J&D Productions, POB 38 Metamora Mi 48455. 1 1/2 hours. I may have got it from this site. NOt too satisfied with quality, it's sort of noisy and jumpy and blurry, but I guess it's complete.

I would run a compression check first mite not need a rebuild. Maybe then some new plugs and of course fresh gas and oil and filter change. Then you can set tappets if needed the old girl just mite be in better shape than you think.

Binder books sells an IH manual for all the gas engines, has a lot of info and all the specs--as stated you will not find word for word instructions, but that will be the best manual you can find. Mine is in the shop, if you can't find it, I'll give you the number.

I would not jump into a rebuild until you know it is needed.

Post pictures and issues here, people will help

Everybody cusses the I&T manual.I have found it very adequet. They give all the torque specs and other info. The only time it was 'inadequet' was when I rebuilt a Hydro100 trans.Even the genuine IH manual had 'holes' in it.Took both to get the correct/complete info.My I&T 'M',etc book has been used so much that is nearly worn out.

Thanks everyone, this site is great. I can't tell you how many times it's saved my bacon with my fords. Of course I'll not do more than is required, just planning ahead since I haven't even brought the thing home yet. The first hurdle will actually be getting it home. Not terribly thrilled about getting a tricycle onto the trailer.
